On Thursday 12 April 2012 the Great Southern Rail (GSR) Sydney to Perth "Indian Pacific" passenger train was diverted from its usual Sydney to Adelaide segment of the route and instead traveled via Melbourne where it was combined with the Melbourne to Adelaide "Overland" passenger train for the run to Adelaide. The Indian Pacific had been diverted due to a train derailment blocking the western NSW line.

GSR operates four long distance Australian passenger trains - The Ghan, Indian Pacific, The Overland and The Southern Spirit. Details about these trains can be found on their website http://www.gsr.com.au/ .
